Waiting game

Find pieces of cockleshells
that were presented to you from hot small hands
in a game you invented
to pass the time while waiting on a blistering beach
for ice creams.
Today you find them in your pockets,
find them on the arm of your sofa,
find them in the bottom of your bag.
Crumbled tiny treasures that you'd promised to keep.
Little feet plugged into hot sand,
straining to see if two 99s were making their way
back through the throng.
Now see if you can find round, white stones,
you'd said,
but the ice creams arrived then,
the game quickly forgotten,
faces up to the sun and
the shells clutched in your hot hands in return.
